CHALTEN: The Luckiest Salami Sandwich in the World.

This is a view of Cerro Torre...and this is the sandwiches that we ate.  Hence, the title

Well, first we want to say we are still alive, but just have been MIA for a few weeks. But we are back and are going to get caught up on blogging. Currently, we are in Bali but need to get yall caught up with our travels.

OK...back to South America-We took a 3 hour bus ride to Chalten, home to some of the world's most notorious peaks, Cerro Torre and Cerro Fitz Roy. We got off the bus and were immediately hit with the most incredible wind either of us have ever felt. That wind continued the entirety of our stay in Chalten. Luckily for us, you can escape the wind by hiking, oddly enough; most of the hikes are protected by the tall peaks we came to see.

We got lucky with a good view of Fitz Roy from town...very rare.

Natalie was super excited about this part of the trip because her good buddy, Stu, will probably climb Cerro Torre. After hearing him talk about the peak for the last couple of years, it oddly became Natalie's goal to see it too! SHOUTOUT TO STUART GILLESPIE (someone let him know he got a personal shoutout).
Chalten itself, is a dot of a town and a small one at that.

This is the rip-roaring town of Chalten.

The only thing that brings people to the town is the outdoors. With that said, the busy season is not until November because it is essentially still winter/early spring in September. So even though people still trickle into the town, we were the first bus of the season to arrive in Chalten. Unfortunately, this meant that most of the stores and excursions were still closed down. For example, there were two, maybe three (so we were told), restaurants open in the entire town when we were there. Also, Bobby had high hopes of getting some ice climbing experience, but there were literally no guides in town. But no worries, we got our monies worth out of our stay. Both days included long and sweat-filled hikes (despite the cold weather) to Cerro Torre and Fitz Roy.

The landscape is too incredible to describe but we took hundreds of photos of each to tell the story. Luckily, the weather gods were with us. We hiked in the mornings and by the time we got to our destinations and were ready to turn around, the weather turned too. Patagonia is known for its unpredictable weather with the possibility of experiencing all 4 seasons in one day. Well we did, and we are convinced there is no place that demonstrates that more than Chalten.

Cerro Torre.  This for you Stuart!!!!

Cerro Torre on the left, Fitz Roy on the right.

The hike to Cerro Torre was amazing and included this valley.  To the right (not visible) is a dense forest that summoned images of Lord of the Rings.

This is a pic of Cerro Torre from the edges of the lake

DO A LITTLE DANCE...(thank you tripod)

Beginning of the hike to Fitz Roy

from a far, but obviously we couldn't wait any longer to start taking pics

There she is... Fitz Roy
